Use of Space

Space is an Element of Design. Space is very personal and is used specifically to create different moods or feelings for a room.There are many ways to manipulate space to create different effects in a room, but are dependent on culture and our own senses.

how to make a room appear smaller/decrease space

* place furniture in middle of the room
* use furniture of different heights
* group furniture according to areas of activity
* use large pieces of furniture
* use furniture that sits low to or on the ground
* warm, dark colors
* rough textures
* contrast patterns, colors,shapes, & textures
* place furniture perpendicular to walls for dividers
* large, bold patterns & textures
* natural light

how to make a room appear larger/increase space

* place furniture near outside walls
* use smaller furniture & patterns
* allow for negative space between furniture and walls
* let as much floor show as possible
* use mirrors or reflective objects
* light, muted, cool colors
* place artificial lighting around perimeter of rooms
* allow eye to wander out a window/next door rooms
* use very little pattern & texture
* wall to wall carpeting
* ceiling to floor windows
* use see-through furniture
* use furniture w/ high legs & lots of space underneath
* use horizontal lines to push the walls outward

This room is too cluttered.

This room is too sparse.

This room is just right.

This room is open to the outdoors.
(it makes it feel larger than the actual room is.)

Merry Christmas

In seminary we all wrote our own interpretation of this page and were encouraged to share our pages on social media. I think you can find blank copies of this page here and if you have a twitter account can go to the hashtag to see what others have written. I hope you are having a wonderful Christmas!

Lego Italian Restaurant

Hello there! :) Today I will show you my newest creation. It is the Italian Restaurant. This restaurant is the kind you might see in a city where there are lots of skyscrapers. This restaurant might be part of a museum for a place to eat. I didn't build a whole building for this just the restaurant part. The two parts are the takeout and kitchen, and the upstairs seating. First I'll show the bigger part of the two, which is the kitchen.
The takeout is just a space where you can take your food and pay for it. Part of the desk is a working cash register, you just press a button on the front of it and $$$ comes out of it, I quite like this feature.

There is a prep table in the middle and also a sandwich station w/ a panini press. There is also a stove, sink, pizza oven, and a pasta maker. The waiters and customers have access to an elevator, which I did not build.

There is a walking space around the kitchen that leads to the elevator. The walking space does not cover the left side because that's a pantry.

This shows what a portion of the upstairs seating would look like. There is one wall that is mainly covered with a window pattern. That is where most of the light comes in during the day. Tables can hold from 2-6 people. The table represented holds 2.

I hope you enjoyed this and maybe were inspired by it.
Bye for now, Tyler
